The Wild Girl, by Corinne Cushman. Cushman was also, according to the text, the author of a book called “Madcap, The Little Quakeress”. One of the chapters of The Wild Girl is actually called “Get Thee To A Nunnery.”
Oh, 19th century… Sigh….
Looks like there’s going to be lots of five cent novels today.
Here’s something old and religious from our small books collection. The book is named Orphan Rachel; or Fruits of Perseverance. It was published in Providence, Rhode Island in 1836.
This book, from 1867, has an interesting dedication.
My Children,
You know i do not tell you stories as some papas do. Therefore, i give you a book of stories. You have read them all before except the last. But you have not seen Mr. Hughes’s drawings before.
If plenty of children like this volume, you shall have another soon.
Your Papa.
By the way, i found pressed violets in this book.
